If you overestimate their comfort and place them in a situation where they are overwhelmed and you don\u2019t remove them \u2013 they will likely become even more fearful.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #5791bd;\"><em>Start at smaller or more intimate events<\/em>.<\/span> Pick those events where they are unlikely to become overstimulated then build up in the size of events.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #5791bd;\"><em>Attend events that are based around an activity<\/em><\/span>, like a walk. Dogs can often become anxious or worried when they are standing around in a group of strange people and dogs. Many of these dogs are less likely to become nervous when engaged in an activity that engages or diverts their attention.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #5791bd;\">Consider purchasing&nbsp;an awareness collar, leash or vest<\/span>&nbsp;<\/em>for your dog to wear. &nbsp;Options at <a href=\"http:\/\/friendlydogcollars.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Friendly Dog Collars<\/a> include \u2018Space\u2019, \u2018Nervous\u2019, \u2018Caution\u2019, \u2018No Dogs\u2019, \u2018Deaf\u2019 or \u2018Training\u2019 and they give other attendees a quick visual of the needs your dog may have in this setting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #5791bd;\"><em>Pack treats<\/em><\/span>. Treats won\u2019t solve high anxiety in a dog, but they can help manage some situations when you\u2019re in a distracting environment. Dogs will pick up on this and react the same from your energy. Project a calm and assertive energy that gives your dog confidence in your company.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #5791bd;\"><em>Be aware of your surroundings<\/em><\/span>. Be a diligent owner by watching your dog and what is going on around them. We have all seen it where the person is busy talking to someone or on their phone, while their dog, usually on a long leash, has wandered away to pester a person or another dog or eat something that they shouldn\u2019t.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #7aac07;\"><em><span style=\"color: #5791bd;\">Leave the <\/span><\/em><\/span><span style=\"color: #5791bd;\"><em>flexi-leash\/retractable leash at home<\/em>.<\/span> A fixed-length leash is safer and provides more control in crowds by helping keep your dog close by your side.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #5791bd;\"><em>Give every dog space<\/em><\/span>, including yours and always ask permission before a \u201cmeet and greet\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #5791bd;\"><em>Read your dog\u2019s body languag<\/em>e<\/span>. If your dog starts to become nervous, position yourself so that you\u2019re a little removed from large groups of people\/dogs, and so that your dog is not feeling \u2018surrounded\u2019 by dogs with no \u2018escape\u2019 option.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #5791bd;\"><em>Monitor your dog<\/em> <\/span>for stress signals, signs of discomfort and their warning signs \u2013 if your dog needs a break, it\u2019s fine to retreat, wait, or move to the back or to the side to distance you and your dog from the crowds until they calm.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #5791bd;\"><em>Ensure your dog&#8217;s comfort to interacting<\/em><\/span>. &nbsp;Of course, your dog is adorable and plenty of people will want to meet or pat them. Not everyone knows how to properly approach a dog, especially young children. It\u2019s up to you to make sure they are comfortable with the interaction and to protect them when it&#8217;s an unwanted advance. Step in if a stranger to your dog approaches without asking and feel free to walk away when your dog has had enough.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #5791bd;\"><em>Keep your pup\u2019s leash short<\/em><\/span> so that they are right by your side. This is the time to use the \u2018heel\u2019 command. Ensure that they are not approaching other dogs and possibly causing or contributing to their nervous experience.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #5791bd;\"><em>Respect fellow pet parents<\/em><\/span> when your dog is meeting other dogs. Always ask first. Allow enough space for them to move around one another and sniff \u2013 dogs generally don\u2019t approach one another for the first time head-on.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #5791bd;\"><em>Attend with a friend or partner<\/em><\/span> so that one person can always be minding the dog while the other stops at stalls, make purchases or visits the restroom.
